The Symbolic Layer is a framework for understanding reality, consciousness, and meaning through the language of systems architecture. It treats the major esoteric traditions as partial documentation of a single underlying architecture, written in the vocabulary available to their authors, and translates that documentation into the modern vocabulary of systems engineering, information theory, and AI.

It is a framework, not a religion, philosophy, or self-help system. It asks to be used — and evaluated by whether it produces useful results — not to be believed.

The work is written by Bill Ballard, a systems thinker drawing on years of engineering practice and decades of theological, contemplative, and esoteric study. The current corpus consists of a sixteen-chapter book outline, five thematic addenda, and a foundational essay, all of which can be read at the project’s GitHub repository while this site develops.
